About Tigress Tile

Tigress Tile is the collaboration between Lisa Choinacky and Andrea Christie. The two have always known each other as artists, when they found themselves in creative classes together, and spent most Saturdays in high school at the community art center in their hometown of South Bend, Indiana. Their materials and areas of interest diverged as they cultivated their respective creative skills. While Lisa earned her BFA from Ball State University, and MFA from Ohio University, Andrea earned her BFA from Indiana University, and MFA from Tulane University. They reconnected in Austin, and were often in dialogue about their studio work. Lisa and Andrea had always been conscious of an overlap in their handling of materials, and interest in immediate and intuitive mark making. When Andrea began working with decals in 2016, she arranged a studio visit with Lisa, to discuss the possibility of translating her ink paintings in to custom decals. This meeting led to others, and through this new partnership, they began to paint together in a truly collaborative fashion on ceramic tiles. In the year that has passed, they have given a name and life their project, and moved into a small shared space in East Austin. They are now Tigress Tile. The collaboration encompasses the intersections of their working styles, and their individual areas of expertise. Through improvisation during shared labor, a transformation takes place. Ideas are sparked into reality, usually ending in a different iteration than the place they began. Through this dynamic process, they are able to put their trust outside of themselves, and find a new intensity and energy in the work.
